Abhijay.Jha@timesgroup.com

Ghaziabad: She is the reason why you reached office on time every day, got to your daughter or son’s school without getting held up in traffic and kept an appointment.

Dorris Francis was there every morning, rain, shine or smog, managing a chaotic intersection on NH-24 all by herself. Since Diwali, though, that ‘post’ has fallen vacant as a crippling stomach pain landed the 59-year-old in hospital. She was subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

“She is admitted at AIIMS and her condition is not good. she has stomach cancer.” Her husband Victor, said om Monday.

Thiers is a family of modest means, and Victor is worried about the cost of treatment. They have a small house in Ghaziabad’s khora  Colony, not far from intersection where Dorris and Victor lost their 17-year-old daughter, Niki, to an accident in 2008.

Help pours in for Dorris in sickbed—TOI dated 30.11.16

Ghaziabad: Help is pouring in for the ‘traffic heroine’ of Ghaziabad, Dorris Francis, who is now undergoing treatment at AIIMS Delhi after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

After a report of her illness was published in TOI on Tuesday, people from across the country are reportedly contributing for Dorris’s treatment according to her husband, Victor. Dorris has been managing traffic on a particular spot at a busy intersection after her daughter, Nikki died in an accident there in 2010.

Victor told TOI that since morning he has been flooded with calls from people from different places asking after her and wishing her a speedy recovery. A sum total of about Rs 70,000 has already been deposited in Victor’s account. Besides, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, had offered free treatment for Dorris.

“I am overwhelmed by the support,” Victor said.

“In the morning I got a call from an elderly lady from Gurgaon, who asked me to collect a cheque from her house as she could not come down on her own because of her age.: Victor said.

Dr Gaurav Agarwal, unit head at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, has offered free treatment to Dorris. “We got in touch with her family members and have asked Dorris’s husband to share with us her medical report which we will discuss with our oncologists,” Agarwal said.

An NGO Shravan Charity Mission engaged in helping poor cancer patients has also offered help to Dorris.

ARTICLE: THE UNWIELDY SIZE OF NEWSPAPERS

Copyright@shravancharitymission

By Kamlesh Tripathi

When you calculate or plan the ‘capacity’ of a crowded place, in terms of a frolicking crowd in a building or a mall you normally take an area of nine square feet per person (3 x 3 feet). In Delhi Metro this painfully gets reduced to four square feet per person (2 x 2) or even less because of the nagging crowd.

In big cities and booming metros preference of real estate in terms of size has only reduced because of the size of the pocket, so much so in very expensive areas three bedrooms have become two and two have become one. And so, one or a small-size or a compact unit is the-in-thing.

In the auto industry also sedans have become compact sedans and compact sedans have become hatchbacks. 350 CC bikes have reduced to 125 CC.

But even with all the stinginess of shapes and sizes all around, the size of newspapers continues to remain as generous as ever and the thickness has only increased because of the advertisements and the complexity of the world at large that needs to be covered.

Now, let us for a moment run through the unwieldy size and spread of the newspaper. Take for example the size of Times of India which is 32.9 cm in width x 52.5 cm height = 13 x 21 inches respectively, which is around 210 square inches or 2.09 square feet and if you open the newspaper holding the two ends in your hands the width increases to 2.2 feet and the area to approximately 4 square feet.

Today, India has a literacy level of 74%. Most homes subscribe to a newspaper, be it may in English, Hindi or any other local language. And with the rise in population the density of people living per square kilometer has only increased. Places have become crowded to overcrowded and people are unable to read their newspaper in crowded places, when most of them are forced to spend a majority of their time during the day in crowded places, because of its unwieldy size, and time immemorial folds and pleats that is extremely inconvenient to spread and read even with a swirling fan above you and this has led to:

-         Increase in number of subscriptions but reduction in actual reading, as most subscribers have only become ‘Head-Line’ viewers because they don’t get an opportunity to read the newspaper during the day in crowded locations and while at work to their hearts content, which over a period of time has become an onerous exercise only because of its size and folds.

-         Most office goers would love to read newspapers in the morning while travelling to office to utilise their time effectively, in a public transport but the unwieldy size of the newspaper doesn’t allow you that convenient privilege.

-         Once you are in office you are on the grind and newspaper is soon forgotten as—RADDI.

SO WHAT SHOULD BE DONE

-         The size of the newspaper should be made more slim and precise so that one can open and read it in crowded niches, in metros and in other modes of public transport where even INTERNET doesn’t work, and so you can’t think of reading e-papers.

-         The correct design could be a ‘newspaper’ that could be opened and read with a single hand more like a book in crowded places.

-         One can think of compartmentalizing the daily newspaper into various chapters that can be sold separately if the subscriber doesn’t want the full newspaper, for everyone doesn’t read everything in the newspaper, such as:

-         Only Headlines
-         Politics
-         Sports
-         Current affairs
-         Page 3
-         Movies and entertainment
-         Spiritual
-         Medical and Health
-         Corporate and Industry
-         Crime
-         International affairs
-         Education
-         Jobs
-         Children

I understand the paper of the ‘newspaper’ is subsidized and the same can continue irrespective of the size and compartmentalized contents as this is one of the widest and most effective ways towards a literate India and even if GOI has to spend extra it should not mind and the citizens and the newspaper lobby should push for it.

Satire: Jagdish Tytler’s divorced conscience in conversation with Jagdish Tytler

 Copyright@kamleshsujata1

By Kamlesh Tripathi

One day while Jagdish Tytler was taking a morning walk, he met his divorced conscience after many years, in the colony park behind his house. His conscience asked.

‘Hi Jagdish! How are you? And how is your legal battle of 1984—Sikh riot coming along? Have you been acquitted?’

‘Yes-yes, more or less.’ He replied in a cheerful tone.

‘More or less, what do you mean by more or less?’ questioned his divorced Conscience.

‘Dear Conscience, I visited Dr Manmohan Singh some time ago when he was the Prime Minister and requested him for a clean chit, and he in turn instructed CBI to give me a clean chit. So, I guess I am out of the rut. But by the way do you know who Dr Manmohan Singh is, as I’m meeting you after an aeon?’

‘Arrey, Jagdish, so what if I left you in 1984, but who doesn’t know Dr Manmohan Singh. Isn’t he the same CEO of India under whose nose all UPA scams were committed? And, I understand through reliable sources he is getting a plum posting again, as he is now being offered the hot chair of ‘CEO-Hell.’

‘CEO-Hell—what is that- Conscience?’

‘Arrey, the way he was ‘CEO-India’ he will now be ‘CEO-Hell,’ where you don’t even require a nomination through Rajya-Sabha as he will be a direct appointee of the President.’

‘But Conscience, he is a very noble soul. Do you think he will be able to handle well, the affairs of hell which are rather slimy and tricky, as CEO-Hell?’

‘Let me tell you Jagdish, you can’t get a better candidate them him. Didn’t you notice how he turned India, which was a heaven, into a ‘corrupt-hell-station,’ in just about a decade, and that to in connivance with the Congress High Command.  Boss you need to understand; appearances can be deceptive like Manmohan Singh, otherwise a meek and honest looking person, but individually, he successfully masterminded to make India one of the most ‘corrupt-hell station’ of the world. And don’t you worry about him as he is a smart operator, but yes, your case is indeed sad.’

‘But … how, Conscience?’

‘Oh-oh, Just to please Gandhi parivar and show your allegiance to Congress Party you instigated a slaughter of 3000 Sikhs, in Delhi riots, in 1984. And that was really stupid of you and what did you think you’ll go scot-free after this ghastly crime? Kanoon ke haath bahut lambe hain Jagdish ji, perhaps you didn’t know that.’

‘But yaar Conscience if you will recall, it all started as a mob reaction, and at the spur of the moment, when Mrs Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her own Sikh guards.’

‘I know-I know everything, as I lived in you then and haven’t forgotten anything. You may use all the legal tricks now to defend yourself in the court of law, but in my court you will always remain guilty of this heinous crime ever.’

‘But, Conscience why are you holding me solely responsible for this crime as there were others too involved in this crime.’

‘Because you were one of the main accomplice’s in getting 3000 Sikhs massacred in the streets of Delhi. And, you made no efforts to stop the riots even with all the power at your command. I left you soon after this crime was committed in 1984. But did you ever introspect as to why you did this and what you got out of this?’

‘I don’t deny I was a great friend of the Gandhis and maybe I too got emotional when Mrs Indira Gandhi was shot dead.’

‘Or was it your insecurity, that if you don’t react sternly you won’t remain the blue eyed guy of Gandhis. You see Jagdish we often commit the mistake of internalizing a feeling in ourselves that we are permanently going to be part of this world and that makes us amass vulgar wealth, perpetrate heinous crimes such as this, and stoop to unethical levels and various sorts of Chamchagiri, trying to be more loyal than the king.

Analyse the difference between yourself and ManMohan, who after converting India into a ‘corrupt-hell-station’ is still roaming free; whereas you lost your complete political career. In 1984 when you committed the crime you were 40 and now past 70 and since then you have just been cooling your heels at home. You converted to Christianity under the influence of James Douglas Tytler a renowned educationist, who impressed you, but still went for this kind of a massacre. Oh what a bright future you had. But all down the drain.’

‘Oh Conscience what do I do now? Show me a way out.’

‘Well for such a genocide one only needs to visit hell for penance, where you’ll probably meet again your old friend Dr Manmohan Singh—CEO-Hell; who might suggest a way out. Anyways take care, and be cautious in your next birth.’
